We designed and iterated on Clarion's SOC 2 compliance platform, evolving from initial client portal concepts to a comprehensive auditor platform with AI-powered features, payment integration, and multi-service expansion planning.

Building an AI-Powered Compliance Platform: The Clarion Story

When Clarion first reached out to us, they had a clear vision: automate SOC 2 compliance with AI, but they needed help translating that into an actual product people would want to use.

Starting Simple, Thinking Big

We kicked off with a two-week design sprint focused on their client portal—the interface where companies would submit evidence and track their audit progress. The team was smart about prioritization: start with the dashboard and requests flow, nail the onboarding experience, and build from there.

What made this interesting was Clarion’s key differentiator: same-day draft reports powered by AI. Most compliance work takes weeks; they could deliver initial insights in hours. Our job was making that magic feel natural, not overwhelming.

The Evolution

Over three months, we watched the product evolve in real-time. What started as a client portal quickly expanded into a full auditor platform. The Clarion team kept pushing boundaries—adding AI chat features, multi-service expansion beyond compliance, even payment integration directly in the onboarding flow.

The most fascinating part was designing around AI workflows that didn’t exist yet. We’d prototype interfaces for agent status tracking, AI reasoning displays, and proactive suggestion systems while the engineering team figured out what was actually possible.

Design Challenges That Mattered

Making AI Transparent: Instead of hiding the AI work, we designed reasoning panels and progress indicators so auditors could understand and trust what was happening.

Complex Data, Simple Interface: SOC 2 frameworks have intricate hierarchies (frameworks → sections → requirements → controls). We flattened this into clean table views with smart grouping and filtering.

Workflow Flexibility: Auditors work differently. Some want to batch review, others prefer deep-diving one control at a time. We built both patterns with keyboard shortcuts and contextual navigation.

The Outcome

The work paid off. Clarion got acquihired—a testament to both the product vision and execution. Looking back, the key was staying close to real user workflows while pushing the boundaries of what AI could automate in compliance work.

Sometimes the best design work happens when you’re building the plane while flying it. Clarion knew where they wanted to go; we helped them get there with a product that felt inevitable once you used it.

Studio Infer worked with Clarion from August to November 2025, designing their SOC 2 compliance platform from initial concept through acquisition.
